Urban Utopia'
Jonathan Chong
'Urban Utopia' is an innovative engaging visual metropolis. Utilising
discarded postcards from the 50s and 60s, new media/video artist Jonathan
Chong purposely and elegantly represents our historical urban scape.
Whether these shifting images are presently existing, redeveloped or gentrified or
forgotten from our collective memory, the images present a world familiar
yet unknown. By deconstructing, remixing and animating the original images
the elements are hauntingly woven together as floating images of the past, in
an elegant pastiche familiar to the present and a memento for our future.
Jonathan Chong creates content based video projections using self -generated digital video and animations, found super 8 films and stock footage. Inspired by the relationship between audio and visuals his work takes on a rhythmical quality and he has been working as a VJ for the past six years. His live performance work is created on the fly using live camera feeds, samples and pre-made animated loops and is beat synced to the live musical acts he plays alongside.
