The music of The Spheres is a registry of modern longings.  It is
things forgotten and remembered.  It is social dreaming cast in light
at 24fps and set in sound with an inventory of instruments and
amplifiers.  It is disappointment, possibility and promise.

A cadre of filmmakers, animators and experimental musicians, AV
ensemble The Spheres are proud to launch new sound and filmic works as
a special event of The 2009 Gertrude Street Projection Festival.

Performing two very special sets in the newly refurbished Newtown
Workers Club , this installation/expanded cinema performance by The Spheres
is not to be missed - perhaps the perfect final destination after you walk,
ride or drive down Gertrude Street's outdoor gallery at night!

The Spheres will be performing 2 sets of composed sound and
multi-screen filmic work at 9pm and 10.15pm.

Event: Sensory Overload

Sensory Overload is the ‘adults only’ night of the Gertrude Street
Projection Festival. This will not be night for anyone with a heart
condition or Epilepsy!

We have some of Melbourne’s most twisted underground artists in the mix.
Each VJ/DJ team has been challenged to create a performance that they
believe will trigger a 'sensory overload'.

Anyone who comes to this gig with the willingness to explore uncharted
corners of the mind will not be disappointed. The night has been
structured as a build up with the most intense performances at the end
to ease you into the experience.

The lineup includes VJs Kontinuum, Devoloid Media, Lindsay Cox, Cletus
Ecoboffin and iCandy working with experimental electro, noise and
breakcore DJs, Simon Leo Brown, Ms Bec, Ebola Disco, Sado and Noistruct.

Artists
2009 Sensory Overload programmer: Trewlea Peters.

Trewlea Peters a video artist for over a decade. It all started with a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Newcastle. I was majoring in video. University was also where I discovered all things weird and wonderful.

Sensory Overload  [ AN ADULTS ONLY EVENT ]
presents performances with projections. Sound and visual appearances by up & coming and established
multmedia artists, melbourne's finest VJs and underground music
producers.

In order of appearance and in their VJ/DJ teams –

Jason Bond is Cletus Ecoboffin. Formally trained in electronics and renewable energy Jason brings a diverse set of skills to his practice. He was one of three artists involved in 'Split Reel': An interactive audiovisual sculpture installed at th e Next wave Festival 2006. From here the trio were invited to the 2007 Asian Art Biennial, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung Taiwan.
Jason is currently indulging his luddite streak and exploring planned obsolescence. He is working towards immersive multimedia installations forgoing the use of computers.

Simon Leo Brown
has made electro-noise improv-theatre with IS Theatre in Hobart and worked for the Hobart Fringe Festival. He has performed with a homemade VHS turntable, done a solo saxophone/dnb set and grooveboxed in duos Transistor7 and ExtraSupa as well as playing in the noise experimental duo Primary Coloured Music. These days however he mostly makes cheesy electro pop songs.

Lindsay Cox has produced video based work in the form of short films and animations. These are a mixture of traditional and new techniques in workshop, residency settings and nightclubs. Highlights in VJ work include two one-month VJ residencies at Taipei’s biggest club, Luxy-Taipei where he performed with a range of international DJ acts including Q-Bert, Bad Boy Bill, Dub Pistols, James Zabiela and Paul van Dyk.
Lindsay recently finished 6 months work as a model maker / animation assistant on the new Adam Elliot stop motion feature film ‘Mary & Max’. Current and recent projects include an installation for ‘The Go Show’ (as part of The Melbourne International Arts Festival) and an animated film clip for Melbourne band ‘Baseball’.
Bec Cole was the other half of Primary Coloured Music. Later she became solo act Birdmix 77, then Birdsonic. At Sensory Overload she will be performing as Ms Bec. She makes electro clashing black rocking goodness (and if you don't know what that means you will find out).

Sean Kelly is VJ Kontinuum. He started Vjing at Krachmacher (2001 – 2005) –   an annual party created by himself and DJ Doppelganga. They were 'sick of the scene' and had a vision of better things. Krachmacher was an immersive experience where dark Drum n Bass blended with futuristic, apocalyptic and abstract visuals. He says it had an incredibly synergistic effect. Kontinuum has a twisted sense of humour, which comes through in his ultra violent and warped imagery.

Sado has been making electronic music since he was about 17. Occasionally he produces a track, but only when in moments his Redtube.com addiction subsides. Sado told me that “Renoise is the best music sequencer in existence—only Nancy boys would use anything else. I finally grew out of this slightly embarrassing stage of IDM, chin-stroking wank when I set all my Planet Mu records on fire.”  For ‘Sensory Overload’ he’ll be playing a heavy breakcore set of all new music.
Dotahn Caspi is one half of renowned Melbourne VJ group Devoloid Media and is now focusing on video art and installation work. Using the rhythmic quality of stop-frame animation with a textural approach to the screen, Dotahn's video work is immersive and unique. Dotahn’s work has been seen in a diverse range of contexts, from theatre works to fashion shows, video clips to live video performance. The VJ work of Devoloid centres itself around concepts of film as image or the devolution of celluloid media. Using stop-frame, photography and animation work, Devoloid creates a movement and rhythm onscreen which is often unsettling and odd. Playing with syncopation and light and dark, Devoloid lends an intensity and urgency to the darker side of music.

Boris Otterdam is Noistruct
and has been making hardcore and breakcore since
1998, starting with Perth extreme noise band "Analogue Seaotter". He founded the Perth label 8-Bit Recordings in 2001 (with Deadcode and The Last Ninja) and was actively involved in Perth's breakcore scene for the next 3 years. In 2003 he relocated to Sydney to become a part of the breakcore scene there. He played inner city pubs and warehouse parties with crews like System Corrupt and Killerwatts. Then he took over the "Syco Radio Show" and later hosted "Illegal Frequencies" every Saturday night on 2SER-FM. Noistruct then moved to Melbourne and can usually be seen playing with crews like Graylands and Black Lotus, and heard running the "Illegal Frequencies" radio show (now on 3RRR-FM 102.7).
